  INRA joins the ANRT Innovation School

The mission of the ANRT, the French Agency for Research and Technology, is to foster closer ties between public and industrial research. This mission coincides perfectly with the impetus given by INRA to developing its innovation and partnership strategy, as underlined in the #INRA2025 document under the #OpenINRA strategic orientation.

INRA is already active in two other ANRT actions (FUTURIS and Club ERA -European Research Area-), and this spring joined the Innovation School (Ecole de l’Innovation). Based on three or four opportunities each year, the aim is to enable encounters between SMEs and a panel of actors from the academic world.  After training the SMEs in cooperation with the academic world and prospection for national and European funding, sessions specific to each company then focus on potential synergies with research units identified as a function of the projects presented. CIFRE contract arrangements (managed by the ANRT) are of course on the list of French funding opportunities (it should be noted that INRA makes considerable use of this system by hosting a constant flow of around 130 CIFRE doctoral students).  

INRA joins the CEA, Arts et Métiers ParisTech, ONERA, UTC and now UPMC in this School, enabling its opening towards the food, agriculture and environment sectors.

Quality of processed fruit
Managing the quality of processed fruits: the example of apricot halves

The raw materials concerned, their transformation processes and storage are likely to affect not only the nutritional quality but also the texture of canned fruits. A clearer understanding of the determinants of this quality, their evolution and the mechanisms in play enables the adjustment and review of production under a sectoral, more global and sustainable manner.

Principal types of agriculture seeking greater sustainability (from 1a to 2c) where the production systems (PS) are represented as a function of (i) the relative share of ecosystem services or exogenous inputs mobilised for agricultural production (axis Y) and (ii) the type of relationships they maintain with their socioeconomic context, based on the global market prices of the products and agricultural components or integration in territorial dynamics (axis X); the principal types of agriculture have been numbered 1 and 2 to take account of the paradigm shift linked to the type of inputs; the letters a, b and c reflect their increasing degree of insertion in territorial dynamics. Characterising the diversity of farming systems

Characterising the diversity of farming systems beyond the contrast between organic and conventional agriculture: inputs, ecosystem services and socioeconomic contexts have been studied and enabled the determination of six main types of agriculture.

Towards photovoltaic systems that can reconcile the production of crops and electricity

Installing systems that can combine the production of crops with that of electricity on the same plot is the challenge of the Sun’Agri project. These so-called dynamic agrivoltaic systems (involving mobile solar panels) are designed to optimise agricultural production.

Apple: a very high quality genome obtained (Nature Genetics June 5th, 2017)

An international consortium led by INRA and involving research scientists in France, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands and South Africa, has been able to obtain a very high quality apple genome by combining the most recent DNA sequencing technologies with classic mapping methods. Their findings provide scientists an unprecedented view of the composition and evolution of a tree genome, and offers new perspectives for the creation of new varieties, notably in order to reduce pesticide use. These results are published in Nature Genetics on 5 June 2017.
